Ion Chromatography (IC)


What is Ion Chromatography?

FAI Materials Testing Laboratory uses Ion-exchange Chromatography (IC), or simply, Ion Chromatography to separate and analyze ionic molecules based on their charge.  Solutions containing unknown ions are run through an ion chromatography column where ions of various types flow at different rates.  As the unknown ions travel through the column, they are separated from the other ions in solution.  A conductivity detector (CD) then measures how many ions are present and the amount of time it took for the ions to travel through the column.  We compare this information to data stored in our libraries, allowing us to identify the ion and calculate its concentration.


Our Equipment

FAI Materials Testing uses the Dionex ICS-3000 DC with the robotic Dionex AS autosampler and the automated eluent generation system. This system controls the eluent gradient (0 mM KOH to 200 mM KOH) and allows us to produce a wide variety of useful ramp and multi-step gradients.  We utilize an Ion Pac AS11-HC analytical column to sufficiently separate the ions in a sample, along with an ASRS-300 suppresser to eliminate background noise.  The ion chromatography instrument requires anywhere from 10 ┬ÁL to 1.5 mL of sample, which can be extracted or washed from a solid.  Tests are run in duplicate for consistency.


Anion Chromatography Analysis

The Ion Chromatography instrument at FAI is dedicated exclusively to analyzing and identifying anions (molecules with negative charge).  We have a wide variety of standards that we can use to give you a quantitative and qualitative analysis of your sample.  Furthermore, we are always acquiring new standards and expanding our identification capabilities.  We currently have the following standards:

  • Iodide
  • Chloride
  • Bromide
  • Formate
  • Sulfate
  • Acetate
  • Silicate
  • Oxalate
  • Phosphate
  • Nitrate
  • Nitrite
  • Thiosulfate

If the standard you are looking for is not listed, we can still test for any anion.  We simply can not guarantee a rush report for standards we do not currently have standard curves for.


Cleanliness Testing

One of the uses of ion chromatography is cleanliness testing.  Surfaces are washed with water and evaporated down to 2mL for ion chromatography.  The data analysis features of the Chromeleon software allow us to quantitatively determine ion contamination for cleanliness testing.
