Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS)
How to KNOW what is in your product
Scope: Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy can identify and quantify volatile organic compounds within a sample. It works by breaking down samples into their components and analyzing each component with a mass spectrometer. This is especially useful for Deformulation of Polymers, Material Characterization, Contamination, and Cleanliness Testing.
Equipment: FAI operates two HP 5890 Series II Gas Chromatographs coupled with an HP 5989B Mass Engine. We have three autosamplers: an HP 7673 Liquid Autosampler with space for up to 100 samples, a Teledyne Tekmar HT3 Static and Dynamic Headspace Autosampler with space for up to 100 samples and a maximum temperature of 300 C , and a CDS Pyroprobe 2000 Pyrolysis Autosampler capable of heating samples up to 14,000 C and space for up to 36 samples. FAI also has access to exstensive mass spectra libraries for confident compound identification.
Input: We test both solid and liquid samples. The solid samples are prepared in quartz rods for Pyrolysis GC-MS or headspace vials for Dynamic Headspace Concentration GC-MS. The liquid samples are prepared in 2mL vials for Liquid Chromatography.
Output: FAI provides mass spectra data as well as chromatograms for complete Material Characterization.
