Measuring the Thickness of Films, Paints, and Multilayer Materials

Many materials and products are coated with protective, anti-corrosive, waterproof, anti-static, or pigmented films. The thicknesses of these coatings and films are often set to small tolerances to maximize efficiency. Since some are very expensive to produce or purchase, manufacturers will put only enough coating on a product to do the job. Using a thicker film than is necessary is a waste of product. FAI Materials Testing Laboratory measures films, coatings, and multilayered materials using a combination of mounting, polishing, and high power optical, metallographic, or electron microscopy.
